What the Word counter does
Paste your writing and every count updates as you type: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, reading and speaking time, and the words you lean on most. Set a target and watch the bar fill. It runs in your browser, so nothing you paste is sent anywhere until you choose to chat about it.
Paste anything: an essay with a limit, a personal statement with a cap, a speech that has to fit five minutes, a paragraph you suspect is too long. The count is live, so cutting a sentence shows you the number drop, and the reading and speaking times tell you what the limit actually means.
It counts words and sentences properly in every language the product speaks, including Japanese and Chinese, which have no spaces between words, because the counting uses the browser's own text segmentation rather than a rule about spaces.

Set a target and a bar fills as you write, with the words still to go or the words over. Under the counts is the list of the words you lean on, with common words filtered out, which is the shortest route to the comment 'you said very eleven times'.

Why ours is better
Counts you can trust in any language.
Most counters split on spaces, which is wrong for a third of the world's writing and shaky for contractions and hyphens. This one uses real word and sentence segmentation.
It tells you what the number means.
Reading time at a normal adult pace and speaking time at a normal talking pace, so 800 words becomes about five minutes read aloud, which is what the assignment usually cares about.
It is the start of the edit, not a dead end.
The words you overuse are listed, and the next step is one click: talk it through with a tutor, or check the grammar, without pasting it anywhere else.
How it was built
The counter runs entirely in your browser and uses the browser's own text segmentation, so nothing is uploaded and there is no server to be slow. The reading pace is the figure from a large review of reading-speed studies, not a guess.
The list of common words to ignore covers English and the main European languages, so the overused-words list stays useful when the writing is not in English. The tool exists because over a million people a month search for exactly this, and every one of them has a draft in front of them.
